My philosophy of care:
"I have have worked with critical and complex patients for most of my nursing career, and I have worked exclusively with geriatric patients since 1999. As a care manager, my role is to supervise, to arrange, to provide that critical layer of oversight, to be the family's eyes and ears, and to ask questions with the experience of a trained clinician. I love it when people hire me earlier, not in the middle of a crisis, so I can get to know the patient. Medical errors are a leading cause of death, and so having someone who knows your medical history — who knows that you don't do well on that drug, or you already had that scan, and here are the images, or your kidney numbers may look good now, but they're unstable — that can be so important. I discover pharmacy medication errors often, every other month. Because of my extensive experience, I don't want my patients to stay in the hospital without an aide or a family member.

The cases I tend to get are the most complex cases, both medically and in terms of family dynamics. I walk families through the medical system, I help them navigate through both the medical and the emotional complexity that comes with critical illness. If the doctor orders an x-ray I make sure it happens right away. My patients are clean and well cared for, so they rarely end up in the hospital for that reason. I provide care the way you would care for your mother or father, if you had the training of an Aging Life Care Professional.™"
